Unless you live under a rock, you’ve heard about the 7.0 Magnitude earthquake in Haiti that destroyed the National Palace in Port-Au-Prince and caused a hospital to collapse- in addition to the destruction of many homes and the deaths of thousands of Haitians. The dozen aftershocks wrought their damage as well.
80% of Haitians lived below the poverty line BEFORE the earthquake. Can you imagine the toll now?
Here is a good source for donating aid for rescue and recovery.
If funds are short, I am certain that there are small sacrifices that we can make that will help those who have lost everything. You can go without coffee in the morning or you can forego that expensive lunch for a peanut butter sandwich made at home. Whatever you feel called to do, please do it.
And pray. Whatever your faith, please pray for Haiti in this time of great tumult. The damage is not simply from the earthquake, but it is from the lack of infrastructure and established wealth. We take building regulations for granted. These things keep millions of urban residents alive. We take life insurance, home insurance for granted. These things cushion the loss of a breadwinner parent, as well as the loss of a home. Most people do not have this protection.
So pray with gratitude, humility and a contrite heart.
I will do the same.

Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.
-James 5:16
Well said. The report of perhaps 100,000 dead is tragic and difficult to imagine.
I think now the death toll is estimated at 150k. =/ Tragedy of this scale is virtually unknown in the US. September 11th and Hurricane Katrina combined pale in comparison!
