I am tired of the relentlessly negative representations of Black women in the media.
In one day, I hear that 48% of Black women have the virus that causes herpes, and that the median wealth of single Black women is ~$5. Oh, and Howard Stern thought that Gabourey Sidibe could never get another job, because she’s fat, Black, and female.
Of course, there is no mention of the (male) sexual partners who pass on Herpes Simplex 2, or of the entrenched racial and gender discrimination in housing, employment and education… or even of a hegemonic Euro-centric aesthetic that requires one to be thin, light-skinned and straight-haired.
I haven’t even mentioned the dearth of media attention that Black women’s supposed dating woes have garnered.
Lemme just focus on more important things, like systemic oppression, historical erasures and social justice. Of course, in my personal life, I should be working on being Christ-like.
